Fertility assessment

The issue of infertility is one which will need to be explored with both partners in the relationship. With regular unprotected intercourse and in the absence of any medical conditions, 80% of most couples will conceive within one year of trying to achieve a pregnancy. A cumulative figure of 90% is quoted within two years of trying for most healthy couples.

Infertility is usually defined as the inability to achieve a pregnancy after trying to conceive for a minimum of 1-2 years. If there are medical conditions affecting one or both partners, then investigations are advised. Infertility may be defined as primary if the couple have never achieved a pregnancy, or secondary infertility if the couple have achieved a pregnancy before regardless of the outcome.

Basic investigations for an “infertile” couple are as follows. Once the results are available, a detailed discussion will be held to discuss the identifiable causes of infertility and the best forms of treatment.
