IVF

What is IVF?

IVF stands for in-vitro fertilization, commonly known as test tube baby treatment. IVF was originally developed as a treatment for tubal causes of infertility, where the egg and sperm are unable to meet. It is also a useful treatment in cases of endometriosis, unexplained infertility, and milder forms of male infertility. The basic principle involves removing a number of mature eggs from the ovary, fertilizing them in the laboratory using an ejaculated sperm sample and then transferring up to 3 (usually 2) fertilized eggs (embryos) back into the uterine cavity.

What are the steps involved in the treatment?

There are 7 basic steps:

1. 'Down regulation' phase – switching off your natural cycle
2. Stimulation of the ovaries (so that several eggs are produced)
3. Monitoring the growth of the follicles (egg sacs) by ultrasound scan
4. The egg collection procedure
5. Fertilisation of the eggs in the laboratory
6. Transferring embryos back into the womb
7. Pregnancy test and follow-up
